Luxor is split by the Nile and the two banks are not interchangeable. The East Bank has the city, the railway station, most of the restaurants and the temples of Luxor and Karnak. The West Bank has the tombs: the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, Hatshepsut's temple, Medinet Habu and Deir el-Medina. A ferry crosses in about ten minutes and runs until the evening.

If you plan two or three days among the tombs, staying on the West Bank saves a river crossing every morning. If you want restaurants and shops within walking distance, the East Bank is easier. Prices on the West Bank are usually lower.
